MEASUREMENT FOR THE AMOUNT OF “GROUP THINK” IN THE CHURCH

“Group Think” is the tendency of highly cohesive groups to work so hard toward sustaining agreement within the group that they resist allowing critical thinking to inform their decision.

Next to each category, provide a rating from 1-5 with:

1- Strongly Disagree 2- Disagree 3- Uncertain 4- Agree 5- Strongly Agree

Symptoms of “Group Think”

_____ Illusion of Invulnerability: “We’re not at risk here.”

_____ Shared Stereotypes: “We” vs. “They.”

_____ Rationalization: self-justifying logic to support a position.

_____ Illusion of Morality: “We’re doing the right thing.”

_____ Self-Censorship: policing each other to cancel critical input.

_____ Illusion of Unanimity: claiming consensus when there isn’t one.

_____ Direct Pressure: applying pressure to sustain agreement.

_____ Mind Guarding: protecting group from outside critical thinking.
